Now this was not actually made by me (I wish) but the different techniques used in the rug intrigued me. I was having lunch in a Persian restaurant the other day, and this rug was hanging on the wall behind me, so I could get a really close look at it. The two edge pieces were in a plain weave using some type of heavy cotton yarn, but the middle part was not. The cream coloured backing was knitted in what looked like jute, and all the coloured bits were cross-stitched on top using wool or something like it. Perhaps this is common in Persia but I had never seen a rug done like that before, although I confess to have not really looked that closely before either. Anyhow, I was fascinated.
